Doggy Love

If you’ve been reading this blog, you know that I got Dulce, my beautiful black rescue, for my Dad back in 2020 during COVID to keep him company while I worked what seemed 24 hours a day to keep my business and my clients’ businesses afloat. Dad’s Alzheimer’s has progressed significantly since then; he rarely gets out of bed, often doesn’t recognize her, and sometimes even shoo’s her away.

Regardless, she stays by his side most of the day. The other night, she wouldn’t come into my house (Dad is in a cottage in the backyard) as she normally does when he goes to sleep, a few minutes later she was barking loudly and had opened his door to make sure I came. I found Dad askew on the bed without covers. Once I got him sorted out she came in with me right away.

I’ve read stories of dogs performing all sorts of acts to protect their “people.” It was the first time I had truly experienced her doing that with my Dad, even though she doesn’t get the same love coming from him that she once did. Tells me something about dogs, their unwavering loyalty, capacity for love, intelligence, and intuitive sense.

How I wish this dog could speak to me in words, and I’m grateful for the way she’s learned to get my attention when it matters to her for his care. Without a doubt, she’s the very best decision I made for Dad to have a companion way back then, paying off in spades today. Please share your rescue dog story with us; they warm our hearts.
