Should I Invest in Obedience Training for My Dog?

The short and long answer is yes. My beloved rescue, Dulce started training when we first got her 5 years ago during the pandemic. I had two different trainers that kind-of freaked me out with their way of training her. They seemed harsh with and there was this fang like looking collar that looked like it came from a torture chamber that I reacted to with an immediate no way. I wasn’t educated enough to understand what they were doing nor did I have/make the time to keep up the treat style of training her.
Fast forward to this year I started thinking about how much I would love it if I could take her into town with me to dinner or to a park where she wouldn’t be dragging me around or even on a plane. So I called a local trainer, K9 Specialist and asked is she to old to benefit from training, will it work, how would you go about it… You get the picture. I signed up for 12 weeks and invested 3K for the trainer to come to my home so it would actually happen however, in all honesty the real invesstment was not the money, it was my time. Every week for an hour with the trainer and additional time in between sessions.
I really wanted the outcome so I went for it. I didn’t do it perfectly, though I will say she actually comes when I call her (70% of the time) which I NEVER thought she would do, she follows commands pretty well, sit’s and stays in place when dogs that snarl at her or I know she doesn’t get along with come walking on “her” street which is huge. All in all I’d say it was a successful investment.
I’ll share more about our journey together in subsequent posts along with “my” training. As they say when you’re with your dog, someone is always being trained!
